The Significance of Halq and Taqsir in Umrah and Hajj Haircut Rules

Umrah Haircut Rules For Men And Women: Halq and Taqsir

Halq and Taqsir are two significant ceremonies that must be done when Hajj or Umrah to Makkah is completed. Depending on the nature of the journey, one of these ceremonies is required for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. Halq is the act of entirely shaving one’s head and is only applicable to men. Taqsir is a term that refers to little hair clipping and is also suggested for women who are conducting Umrah. In this blog, we will discuss the relevance of Halq and Taqsir, as well as Umrah haircut requirements and their importance in Islamic culture.

Importance of Umrah Haircut

Pilgrims must do either Halq or Taqsir to exit Ihram according to Umrah process. Women must cut their hair to the length of a fingertip to remove Ihram. Many hadiths emphasize the importance of Umrah haircut rites, which are frequently reported by Islamic scholars. The significance of this practice stems from the notion that one’s hair is associated with one’s look and vanity in the world. One must disconnect from it and follow the path of simplicity and spirituality in order to entirely surrender to Allah.

According to Ismail Ibn Kathir

According to Ismail Ibn Kathir, a well-known scholar, “In a dream, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw himself entering Makkah and performing Tawaf around the House. He told his companions about this dream when he was still in Madinah…some of them indeed had their head hair shaved, while some of them had their head hair shortened.”

The Prophet’s dream came fulfilled when he shaved his head totally during Hajjatul Wida. He began the Halq rite by shaving the right side of his head first, then progressing to the left. After completing Halq, the Prophet (PBUH) emphasized the importance of these ceremonies by asking mercy three times for those who complete Halq and once for those who perform Taqsir.

Abdullah Ibn Umar narrated in Sahih Al-Bukhari

Abdullah Ibn Umar narrated in Sahih Al-Bukhari, “Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said, ‘O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved.’ The people said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger! And (invoke Allah for) those who get their hair cut short.’ The Prophet (PBUH) said, ‘O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved.’ The people said, ‘O Allah’s Messenger! And those who get their hair cut short.’ The Prophet said (the third time), ‘And to those who get their hair cut short.’ Nafi said that the Prophet had said once or twice, ‘O Allah! Be merciful to those who get their head shaved,’ and on the fourth time he added, ‘And to those who have their hair cut short.'”

Haircut Rules for Performing Halq for Umrah

The rules for Halq for Umrah require men to shave their entire head, while women must cut their hair to the length of a fingertip. It is important to note that any haircut done before performing Umrah will not be deemed Halq or Taqsir. Hence, Halq before Umrah is not permitted. Because it is banned to cut your hair once you put Ihram on, it is not permissible to conduct Halq before Umrah.

Women’s Taqsir Rules

Women are required to perform Taqsir, which is a little hair clipping, after completing the Umrah Tawaf and Sa’ee. The length of the clipped hair should be equal to the tip of the finger. The Taqsir ceremony is less severe than the Halq ceremony, which is mandatory for men
