Requirement of Niyyah
The rationale for the Niyyah requirement is to make a distinction between acts of worship and routine daily activities. Additionally, it distinguishes between the type and degree of worship, or whether the act of worship is supererogatory or not.
How to Do Niyyah
Niyyah should be made from the heart rather than using the tongue, according to Islamic law. If a person expresses a verbal desire that is at odds with their true heart, their heart’s intention always prevails.
According to certain scholars, it is Mustahabb to verbally express one’s intentions as well, strengthening the intention itself.
If a wish is expressed aloud, it may be in Arabic or the speaker’s native tongue.
Niyyah for Hajj and Umrah
After putting on Ihram clothing and approaching the Miqat, the Niyyah for Hajj and Umrah should be made there or nearby. If an audible intention is being expressed, the following are some examples of intentions that can be made in Arabic.
Niyyah for Umrah
If you are undertaking Umrah at any time of the year or as part of Hajj al-Tamattu, you must make this niyyah. Later, a second Niyyah is erected for Hajj al-Tamattu.
لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ عُمْرَةً
Labbayk Allahumma Umrah.
O Allah, here I am to perform Umrah.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أُرِيْدُ الْعُمْرَةَ
Allahumma Innee Ureedul Umrah.
O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أُرِيْدُ الْعُمْرَةَ فَيَسِّرْهَا لِيْ وَتَقَبَّلْهَا مِنِّيْ
Allahumma Innee Ureedul Umrata fa-Yassirhaa lee wa Taqabbal-haa Minnee.
O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah, so accept it from me and make it easy for me.
Niyyah for Hajj
If you’re performing Hajj al-Tamattu (after Umrah is complete) or Hajj al-Ifrad, you must make this Niyyah (only Hajj).
لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ حَجًّا
Labbayk Allahumma Hajj.
O Allah, here I am to perform Hajj.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أُرِيْدُ الْحَجَّ
Allahumma Innee Ureedul Hajj.
O Allah, I intend to perform Hajj.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أُرِيْدُ الْحَجَّ فَيَسِّرْهُ لِيْ وَتَقَبَّلْهُ مِنِّيْ
Allahumma Innee Ureedul Hajja fa Yassir-hu lee wa Taqabbal-hu Minnee.
O Allah, I intend to perform Hajj, so make it easy for me and accept it from me.
Niyyah for Umrah and Hajj
You must make this Niyyah if you are performing the Hajj al-Qiran (Umrah and Hajj together).
لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ عُمْرَةً وَ حَجًّا
Labbayk Allahumma Umratan wa Hajj.
O Allah, here I am to perform Umrah and Hajj.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أُرِيْدُ الْعُمْرَةَ وَ الْحَجَّ
Allahumma Innee Ureedul Umrataw-wa Hajj.
O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah and Hajj.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أُرِيْدُ الْعُمْرَةَ وَ الْحَجَّ فَيَسِّرْهُمَا لِيْ وَتَقَبَّلْهُمَا مِنِّيْ
Allahumma Innee Ureedul Hajja fa Yassir-hu lee wa Taqabbal-hu Minnee.
O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah and Hajj, so make them easy for me and accept them from me.
